Because China: Roadhouse Blues

Because China: Roadhouse Blues

Here is what happened when one homeowner refused to move for the construction of a new road in Wenling, Zhejiang, China. Perhaps the owner has a plan to open up a drive-through fast food restaurant? Or maybe this will become China's first genuine Roadhouse Blues bar and grill? Either way one can't help but think of this old hit pop song by Madness:

FLASH NEWS UPDATE: This story has now broken into the mainstream news. The owner is named Luo Baogen and he refuses to move as he claims that the Chinese government's relocation compensation offer was too low. He is now labeled as a "Nail Householder". Continued...

Update: This house was recently destroyed after duck farmer Luo Baogen and his wife, agreed to accept compensation of 260,000 yuan ($41,000). Lone Chinese Home Destroyed (12-01-2012)

Update: One of our readers has submitted the following information and embedded photo:
Mr. T says:

The holdouts --Nail Householders--are wealthy Rastas who know they will be protected by their Lion of Zion painting aka Sword-Lion (劍獅) shown in the DailyMail's 4th photo.

Chairman Meow Says: Dog my cats if I want!

In the past few years, it has been widely believed that China had fully embraced democracy and had forgotten communism once and for all. Well, earlier today we discovered yet another new "Because China" item that says "Goodbye Kitty" to that notion and also: "Dog my cats if I want!"

Because China: Wife Stands on Husband When Shopping

Here is another funny photo of a Chinese wife standing on her husband's back while shopping at the local grocery store. One could imagine other alternative ideas to this somewhat risky "slave zone" option, like getting help from the store's staff et al. But, instead, we can only wonder "Why?" and then reply with "Because China".

Because China: People's Liberation Army in Action!

XXX Large Size

For many years up until 2001, the U.S. Army recruited young men and women with the well-known phrase of "Be All You Can Be". And prior to that they used the phrase "Today's Army Wants to Join You" to attract new GIs to the ranks. Well the above WTF photo of China's People's Liberation Army in action suggests that the Chinese may have also borrowed those same US recruiting slogans, right?!?!

NOPE.

Because China.

Because China: New McMansion Penthouses!

Via Architizer August 15, 2012

In the bustling city of Zhuzhou, Hunan province, China, there are many factories and textile mills. The recent explosive economic growth and desire for housing located near the working place has inspired some residents to build their dream homes on the top of a city building in an effort to help preserve and protect the outlying countryside. Mmmmkkkaaaayyy... At this time there are only four houses atop a five-story shopping center.

This new trend may or may not become more popular in China. But why don't they just build the houses on the ground?

Because China.

Because China "HFC Hitler Fried Citizens"

Because China HFC Hitler Fried Citizens

This is not photoshopped, it is for real. To be sure it clearly says "HFC Hitler Fried Citizens" with a picture of Adolph Hitler dressed up as the iconic Colonel Sanders of KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken). And it is, indeed, from China, of course. So WTF is this OMFG jaw-dropping logo for?

Well, believe it or not, this is an iPhone case that can be purchased from 798 Fantasy Utopia Studio which appears to be a kind of fashion accessory retail website. Mmmmkkkaaayy... but why?

Once again there is only one answer: Because China.

Because China: Telephone Pole Repair Work

Via Daily Guilin This is either an ad for Chinese Duct Tape or this is a photo of actual telephone pole repair work done in Guilin, China. Most likely it was yet another car or truck accident that brought down this pole. Then they just taped it back up with some kind of tape and, obviously, now it's fixed. Why? Because China.

Why, China Why? Because China #6

A few months ago we investigated a photo of a woman with a burning cigarette mounted to her glasses and a burning cigar sticking out of her ear. That picture was explained by it's source as a kind of Chinese alternative medicine. OK, fine. Whatever.

Today we have discovered the below photo and are once again asking "Why, China Why?":

Why, China Why? Because China #6

The source of this photo turns out to be a Japanese blog post about a trip to Mongolia, which is technically a part of China. But the blogger does not offer an explanation for why one truck was carrying ten trucks on local roads and highways too! The Japanese post only talks about how doing something like this would be impossible in Japan etc. Therefore once again we have no other choice but to answer this with "Because China".

The Truth on China's Dangerous Holes

Chinese girl falls down a sidewalk hole in Xi'an

Via News on Japan April 25, 2012

Yesterday the world was stunned by the CCTV video of a teenage Chinese girl falling into a six-meter (19-foot) deep sidewalk hole in the city of Xi'an in northern China. She was rescued by taxi driver Wang Wei and the local fire department. She was unhurt and according to CNN her parents contacted Wang Wei to thank him for his brave rescue. Here is a news video about this from The Huffington Post:

Taxi driver turned hero - Wang Wei:

Taxi Drive Wang Wei

The article in the Huffington post also mentions that earlier this month a woman in Beijing died after a sidewalk collapse sent her plummeting into a pool of scalding water. But what the Huff Post and other mass media news organizations did not report is that this kind of accident occurs fairly often throughout China.

According to the blogger Liuzhou Laowai there have been many people (and at least one water buffalo) of Liuzhou, China that have unfortunately fallen into sidewalk holes, wells and cesspools. Most were taken to the hospital and treated for injuries but some did not make it. This blogger has been reporting and joking about the "ancient and noble art" of falling down holes for many years now and has a shocking archive of such accidents.

So why does this happen so often in China? Well, apparently, the necessary safety regulations either don't exist or they are not followed by companies involved in road work, sidewalk work and other public projects. Also, according to the Liuzhou Laowai "manhole covers are also regularly stolen for their scrap metal value". O.O

So why is that so? Well the only answer available for that inquiry is "Because China".

Because China: Panda Bully on China Airways

Because China: Panda Bully on China Airways

In the above photo from China Airways we see the infamous Panda Bully who has been known to cause havoc in office buildings, kitchens and supermarkets throughout Asia and the rest of the world. Don't believe it? Think its Photoshopped? Well just watch the below video and keep reading:

According to Snopes the above photo is, in fact, a real panda named "Squee Squee" with his caretaker, Fu Jiang Lang on a trip to a zoo in the USA. China Airways is a sponsor of the panda sanctuary at Cheng Du and they donated two business class seats for the transfer of Squee Squee to his new home. They decided that giving him and his caretaker passenger seating would be much safer than putting the panda in the cargo hold. So the above photo is real and the TV commercials are for Panda Cheese by Advance Marketing for Arab Dairy. The background music is the Buddy Holly song "True Love Ways." And yes this is all old internets, but you know just like North Korea is Best Korea it is true that Old Internets is Best Internets.

Why, China Why? Because China #5

Earlier this month, we once again asked the unanswerable question of "Why, China Why?" for a picture of some Chinese guy using a jackhammer on the street in his flip-flops! But we did get one good answer from Mr. T who wrote in that "Japan can never hope to beat China, the masters of hi-tech." And that kind of explained that.

However today we find ourselves asking once again "Why, China Why" with the discovery of this new photo:

Why, China Why? Because China #5

If you check the source of this pic you'll see a caption with "6. Also among other healing procedures in this resort there is attaching of walnuts to the eyes and putting on fire dried leaves of Chinese wormwood which are placed in the ears of patients."

Mmmmkaaay...but again WHY, CHINA WHY??? And once again we arrive right back at the same exact answer "Because China."

Why, China Why? Because China #3

In our first "Because China" post we featured a bulldozer on top of an old apartment building while demolishing it! And our favorite Japan correspondent Mr T replied "Why China"?--This is the way they built it" and cleverly referenced this photo. And that reply did speak volumes.

But now we have another inexplicable "Because China" photo that once again begs the question "Why China, Why?"

Why, China Why? Because China #3.

Any ideas at all are greatly appreciated.
