David Bowie "Five Years" Tokyo Live

For decades, people all around the world have listened to David Bowie's Five Years and/or watched this live in Tokyo video or other video versions of it millions and millions of times. But watching and listening to it today, one can really understand this song's profound significance:

"Pushing thru the market square, so many mothers sighing
News had just come over, we had five years left to cry in
News guy wept and told us, earth was really dying
Cried so much his face was wet, then I knew he was not lying..."

David Bowie: "Look up here, I'm in Heaven"

From DavidBowie.com

"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief."

In this song "Lazarus" he sings "Look up here, I'm in Heaven"

Quite a fitting stage exit from this world, indeed. RIP.

Note: The sold out off Broadway play Lazarus written By David Bowie & Enda Walsh continues through January 20th. Most likely it will be continued for a much longer run.

David Bowie "Heroes" in Nike China Commercial

Above is a brand-new commercial featuring the legendary hit song "Heroes" which was co-written by David Bowie and Brian Eno in 1977. This short commercial also features several Chinese Olympic athletes engaged in various competitions as this ad is part of a new Nike China marketing campaign which emphasizes that the right attitude and positive outlook is vital for anyone who hopes to compete successfully at any level in any sport. And, in my opinion, they could not have picked a better song for this inspirational and upbeat campaign, indeed.

Well, of course, "Heroes" has been used in many different advertisements in the past, but this current ad could very well end up being the biggest and most widely distributed of all so far.

John Lennon & George Harrison Japan 1966

John Lennon & George Harrison Backstage Japan 1966

Here is a rare photo of John Lennon and George Harrison tuning up their guitars backstage in Tokyo, Japan in 1966. From June 30 to July 2 of that year, the Beatles performed five concerts at the Nippon Budokan indoor arena in Tokyo. Of course, all the shows were sold out and the live television broadcasts captured an incredible 60% audience rating. These concerts were the first musical events ever held at the Budokan arena, which was originally dedicated for the competition of traditional martial arts. These landmark shows also inspired many young Japanese to start playing guitars and the biggest ever Japanese rock band revolution soon followed. That movement forever changed the direction of the Japanese popular music scene.

Perhaps the above photo was taken prior to the start of this show:

Rex Ray to Rob Pongi: "FU"

A couple weeks ago, as usual, I was "clowning around" inside David Bowie's site: Bowienet and somehow I inspired the world-renowned fine artist and graphic designer Rex Ray to create this:

rex ray pongi

And I think it all means "For You Pongi-san!!" But then again it could possibly mean something else entirely different?!?! Well, either way, its all good and just a kind of Bowienet "inside" joke.
