Yesterday in Beijing, during the “China-U.S. Basketball Friendship Match”, a game between the Georgetown Hoyas and the Bayi Military Rockets suddenly exploded into a bench-clearing brawl after a Georgetown player was fouled. This melee included punches, tackles, and even some chair throwing by some of the players.
Also some Chinese spectators threw plastic water bottles at the Hoyas players and fans as the team quickly left the court. There reportedly was another spectator armed with a
stanchion who also got involved in the chaos. The heavy-hitting game, which was held at the Olympic Sports Center Stadium court, was tied at 64 with just over nine minutes to go when this happened:
One Chinese doctoral student was quoted by
Gene Wang as saying “I can tell the Chinese players provoked the conflict... The [Bayi] basketball players have got a bad habit of revenge on every small, unfair thing in the Chinese Basketball Association. It’s a hooligan’s habit.”
