Premiere of "Camp 14 - Total Control Zone"
This horrifying documentary film is based on the life of Shin Dong-Huyk who was born in the North Korean re-education Camp 14 located in Kaechon, South Pyongan Province. Shin had no concept of the world outside the camp until he escaped at the age of 23. To date he is the only known person to have been born within and then successfully escaped from a maximum security camp in the DPRK. He tells a terrifying tale of extremely dangerous labor, daily beatings, inhumane torture, forced abortions, infanticide, public executions and cold-blooded murder committed by the prison guards. This film also includes the testimonies of Oh Yang-nam an ex-secret policeman and Hyuk Kwon a former guard at Camp 14. Below is the official movie trailer:
"Camp 14 - Total Control Zone" will premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival with the schedule of its showing to be announced on August 21st.
UPDATE: This film can now be seen on Netflix.

Because China: New McMansion Penthouses!
Via Architizer August 15, 2012
In the bustling city of Zhuzhou, Hunan province, China, there are many factories and textile mills. The recent explosive economic growth and desire for housing located near the working place has inspired some residents to build their dream homes on the top of a city building in an effort to help preserve and protect the outlying countryside. Mmmmkkkaaaayyy... At this time there are only four houses atop a five-story shopping center.
This new trend may or may not become more popular in China. But why don't they just build the houses on the ground?
Because China.

Japan's "Brain Disco" Kicks Out Boring DJs
Did you ever go to a club and leave soon because the DJ's music sucks? Well, you don't have to run away anymore. The same company that brought us the very popular magical thinking cap known as "Necomimi" Japanese Cats Ears For "Communication", neurowear has teamed up with Qosmo for an all new wacky brainwave scanning device known as the Brain Disco! What is a "Brain Disco"? Well, perhaps it is best understood in the manufacturer's own words:

North Korean Concentration Camp Drawings
The above drawings were done by North Korean refugees who were helped to escape from the DPRK by the Life Funds For North Korean Refugees non-government organization. These NSFW illustrations depict torture, human rights violations and the daily despair of living in Camp 12 Chongo-ri Kyo Hwa So. The Chongori reeducation center is located in the North Hamgyong Province and has a very high death rate. The following description of this camp is from the Chosunilbo:
One defector who had a hair's breadth escape from Chongori, has said, "Chongori is a living hell. Yoduk (the notorious prison camp) is a much better place." At Chongori, inmates are doomed to die of malnutrition. Forced to work for 14 hours a day, they are given only two whole potatoes and a handful of cornmeal a day. Few inmates stick it out for more than three months, no matter how healthy they are, because beatings are a daily routine there, he said.Located in Tokyo, Japan Life Funds For North Korean Refugees helps North Korean refugees escape to Japan and other countries and start new lives. Among other things, this NGO also provides food shipments via balloon deliveries and through its own local networks from South Korea to North Korea. Find out more information at their official Japanese website and please donate to help this organization. Taiwan's First Buddhist Same-Sex Marriage
Via CNN August 13, 2012
TAOYUAN--Long-term lesbian couple Huang Mei-yu and You Ya-ting were married in Taiwan's first same-sex Buddhist wedding ceremony on August 11, 2012 in Taoyuan, northern Taiwan. Some 300 Buddhists chanted Sutras to bless the couple who are both 30 years old. The couple wore traditional white wedding gowns and exchanged prayer beads instead of rings in a Buddhist monastery. The couple's parents initially agreed to attend the ceremony, but because of the international media exposure they were absent. The couples' marriage is not legally recognized, but Taiwan is one of the most liberal cultures in Asia and many gay and lesbian rights groups are petitioning the government to legalize same-sex marriage. Via BBC 9 August 2012
Authorities in Vietnam have fined VietJet Air approximately US $956.00 for having a "mile high club" style three minute Hawaiian themed bikini dance show aboard a flight from Ho Chih Minh City to Nha Trang. The five young girls who participated in the mid-flight performance were contestants of a local beauty pageant Miss Ngoi Sao. None of the many male passengers who used cellular phone video cameras to record the show were penalized.

Eat Chinese Boss Noodles Like A Boss
It has been said by many of our readers that China is attempting to overthrow Japan as the world's premiere WTF superpower, and we have just now found more evidence to support that theory. In the very competitive instant noodles market, apparently there is a brand new Cup Noodles challenger from China known as Boss Noodles! And here is a very wacky new demonstration video on how to eat Chinese Boss Noodles like a boss:
After watching the above clip more than a few times now it sounds as though the Chinese narrator is yelling "FFUUUU BITCHES" at the end! Also right when he yells that, the two Asian females grab onto the white guy and start dancing while the "Fast Business" text appears so whaddya think???

Chinese Army Kills Asian Hornets' Nest With Fire
Via SFGate July 31, 2012
A large colony of giant Asian hornets had killed one man and stung many other people in the small town of Tsz Wan Yuen Tsuen in the Jiangin district of China. The hornets have a very painful sting that is about 6mm (1/4 inch) deep and can include a lethal dosage of venom. Authorities tracked down the insect infestation to a single nest in the village. However, the nest was too large and too high above the ground to manually destroy. So the Chinese army brought in a flamethrower and they killed it with fire:

NMA TV On Kim Jong Un's 'New' Wife
The past few weeks or so have been filled with speculation and theories about Kim Jong Un's "mystery woman" and his "new" wife. She was previously misidentified as Hyon Song Wol of the electronic music group Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble which is known for some popular hits including "Excellent Horse-like Lady" and "I Love Pyongyang". However, that rumor was not true as Kim Jong Un Didn't Marry the North Korean Pop Star Behind 'Excellent Horse-Like Lady'.
North Korea's state media announced on July 25th that The Great Eater's wife is actually Comrade Ri Sol-ju who is another popular singer of the DPRK. Apparently, they have been married for three years or so and may have one child. So the mystery of it all continues to be slowly revealed.
Earlier today Next Media Animation TV released this hilarious 3D animation news reel on this puzzle:

John Lennon & George Harrison Japan 1966
Here is a rare photo of John Lennon and George Harrison tuning up their guitars backstage in Tokyo, Japan in 1966. From June 30 to July 2 of that year, the Beatles performed five concerts at the Nippon Budokan indoor arena in Tokyo. Of course, all the shows were sold out and the live television broadcasts captured an incredible 60% audience rating. These concerts were the first musical events ever held at the Budokan arena, which was originally dedicated for the competition of traditional martial arts. These landmark shows also inspired many young Japanese to start playing guitars and the biggest ever Japanese rock band revolution soon followed. That movement forever changed the direction of the Japanese popular music scene.
Perhaps the above photo was taken prior to the start of this show:

Photo of Red Beach Near Panjin City China
Here is a beautiful photo of the Red Beach near Panjin City, China. The beach is part of the Liao River delta about 30 kilometers southwest of the city. The Red Beach gets its name from the seablite plants that start growing green in Spring and gradually turn red and then become a bright vivid red color in Autumn. Most of this beach is closed to the public as it is a part of the Shuangtai Hekou Nature Reserve. Only a small section is open to tourists who visit this popular natural attraction in the Liaoning Province of China.

North Korean Gun Battle Kills General?
Via The Chosun Ilbo (English Edition) July 20, 2012
According to some unconfirmed intelligence reports some 20-30 North Korean soldiers and General Ri Yong-ho were killed in a gun battle in Pyongyang, North Korea. Earlier this week it was reported that the general had been fired by Kim Jong Un. Other reports claimed that Ri resigned because of an "illness." It is believed that the Supreme Leader had ordered Vice Marshal Choe Ryong-hae to physically remove him from office and that is what triggered the fire fight earlier today. It was also reported that there were many previous clashes between Choe and Ri:
A gunbattle broke out when the North Korean regime removed army chief Ri Yong-ho from office, leaving 20 to 30 soldiers dead, according to unconfirmed intelligence reports. Some intelligence analysts believe Ri, who has not been seen since his abrupt sacking earlier this week, was injured or killed in the confrontation. According to government officials here, the gunbattle erupted when Vice Marshal Choe Ryong-hae, the director of the People's Army General Political Bureau, tried to detain Ri in the process of carrying out leader Kim Jong-un's order to sack him. Guards protecting Ri, who is a vice marshal, apparently opened fire. "We cannot rule out the possibility that Ri was injured or even killed in the firefight," said one source. Continued...UPDATE: Source: Kim to reform North Korean economy after purge By Benjamin Kang Lim Reuters 7/20/2012
BEIJING — Impoverished North Korea is gearing up to experiment with agricultural and economic reforms after young leader Kim Jong-un and his powerful uncle purged the country's top general for opposing change, a source with ties to both Pyongyang and Beijing said. The source added that the cabinet had created a special bureau to take control of the decaying economy from the military -- one of the world's largest -- which under Kim's father was given pride of place in running the country. The downfall of Vice Marshal Ri Yong-ho and his allies gives the untested new leader and his uncle Jang Song-thaek, who married into the Kim family dynasty and is widely seen as the real power behind the throne, the mandate to try to save the battered economy and prevent the secretive regime's collapse.
